How to Choose a Traditional Wood Humidor

But choosing one requires more than aesthetic preference. A poorly constructed humidor can ruin thousands of dollars of premium cigars. A well-crafted one will protect and enhance a collection for decades. Here is what to look for — and three brands worth your investment.

What Makes a Great Wood Humidor
1. Spanish cedar lining — non-negotiable
The single most important feature of any traditional humidor is what's on the inside. A quality humidor must be lined with Spanish cedar (Cedrela odorata). No other wood performs the same function, and no substitute is acceptable.
Moisture regulation
Spanish cedar is uniquely porous. It absorbs excess humidity when conditions run damp and releases it slowly when the environment dries out, acting as a natural buffer that stabilises the internal climate between refills.
Aroma and flavour
Over time the subtle sweet oils of Spanish cedar blend with the natural oils of your cigars, smoothing out harshness and adding depth in a way no artificial humidification system replicates.
Mould inhibition — and what cedar cannot do
The aromatic compounds in Spanish cedar help inhibit blue-green mould, and the wood's moisture buffering keeps conditions out of the range where mould thrives.
But cedar does not protect against tobacco beetles, and it is worth being blunt about this because the opposite is repeated constantly. Beetle eggs (Lasioderma serricorne) are already present inside the tobacco leaf long before a cigar reaches you — they survive fumigation and grading, and no lining repels them.
What controls them is temperature. Eggs stay dormant below roughly 22°C and hatch above it. A cedar-lined humidor sitting at 25°C will still produce an infestation, and in Hong Kong an unairconditioned room sits above that threshold for much of the year. Cedar is a humidity tool, not a pest tool.

The two tests to run before you buy
The whoosh test. Lift the lid and let it fall shut under its own weight. You should hear a soft, pneumatic whoosh — air being compressed and expelled as the lid seats. That sound confirms the tolerances are tight.
The dollar bill test. Place a banknote across the lip and close the lid. You should feel firm, even resistance when pulling the paper out — all the way around the perimeter. If the bill slides free at any point, humidity will bleed out continuously regardless of what humidification you put inside.

2. Construction and wood preparation
Wood is organic. It swells, contracts and warps in response to humidity. A humidor that hasn't been built from properly prepared wood will eventually break its own seal.
- Aged and kiln-dried stock. High-end humidors are built from wood air-cured or kiln-dried for an extended period — sometimes years — to reach stable equilibrium before it is ever cut into panels. Wood that hasn't been properly dried will move after assembly, and movement means seal failure.
- Joinery. Look for mitred or dovetailed corners — joints that rely on precision rather than adhesive. Avoid humidors depending heavily on glue and staples; both degrade under prolonged humidity, and when they fail the box fails with them.
- Hardware. Solid brass quadrant hinges are the standard on quality humidors. Cheap piano hinges sag over time, gradually pulling the lid out of alignment and compromising the seal — often before you notice any obvious damage.

3. Buy larger than you think you need
Every humidor on the market is rated by a count, and that count is almost always calculated using slender Corona-sized cigars. If you smoke anything wider — Robustos, Toros, Churchills, or any large ring gauge — the real capacity drops sharply.
A "50-count" humidor realistically holds 30 to 35 modern cigars, not 50. Buy one 30% to 50% larger than your current collection requires. Cigars need space for air circulation, and a humidor packed to capacity develops uneven humidity throughout. Build in room to grow and you will avoid buying twice.

Setting It Up in Hong Kong
A humidor is a buffer, not a climate system. It stabilises what you put it in — which means the room matters.
Season it before the first cigar
New Spanish cedar is dry and will pull moisture out of your cigars until it reaches equilibrium. Season the empty box first — most quality humidors ship with instructions, and a Boveda seasoning pack is the least error-prone method. Skipping this step is the most common way a good humidor gets blamed for a bad first month.
Target conditions
65–72% relative humidity at 18–22°C suits most collections. As noted above, some brands specify slightly higher humidity for their own blends — Davidoff calibrates its polymer regulators to 70–72%. For a mixed collection of Cuban and New World cigars, the lower band is the safer default.
Temperature is the part most people under-manage. Hong Kong's ambient humidity routinely passes 80% in summer, but the more damaging number is the thermometer: above roughly 22°C, dormant beetle eggs in the tobacco become viable. Air conditioning is not a luxury here — it is the actual pest control.
Calibrate the hygrometer
An uncalibrated hygrometer can read several points off, and a humidor failing silently at 78% looks identical to one holding perfectly at 68%. Calibrate with a salt test or a reference pack when the box is new, then again annually.

How many cigars does a 50-count humidor actually hold?
Typically 30 to 35. Manufacturer counts are calculated using slender Corona-sized cigars, which almost nobody smokes exclusively. A collection of Robustos, Toros and larger ring gauges will fill a 50-count box at around two-thirds of its stated capacity — and you should not fill it completely anyway, because cigars need air circulation to humidify evenly.

Why Spanish cedar rather than American red cedar?
There is a neat irony here: neither is actually a cedar. The wood used in clothing chests is Eastern red cedar (Juniperus virginiana), a juniper. Its scent is familiar and strong — and that strength is the problem. Its oils are far too powerful for tobacco and will permanently overpower a cigar's flavour, leaving it tasting of camphor rather than the blend the maker intended.
Spanish cedar (Cedrela odorata) is a relative of mahogany, and its aromatic profile is substantially subtler. It contributes a gentle sweetness that elevates the tobacco rather than competing with it, and its porosity is better calibrated for humidity cycling — it absorbs and releases moisture without the warping that would compromise the seal.
Does a Spanish cedar lining prevent tobacco beetles?
No, and this is worth correcting because it is repeated everywhere. Beetle eggs are already inside the tobacco leaf when the cigar is made — no lining repels them. Their dormancy is controlled by temperature: below roughly 22°C they stay inert; above it they hatch.
This makes temperature control the single most important pest measure, particularly in Hong Kong. A perfectly humidified cedar-lined humidor in a 26°C room is a beetle incubator.
How do I know if my seal is failing — and can I fix it?
The clearest sign is a humidor that consistently loses humidity, needing a recharge every few days rather than every few weeks. Verify with the dollar bill test: if the paper slides out without resistance anywhere around the lid, the seal is leaking.
For a minor leak, re-seasoning is often the first remedy — if the wood has dried and contracted slightly, reintroducing moisture allows it to expand and tighten the fit. If the wood has visibly warped, or the hinges have sagged and pulled the lid out of alignment, the repair is more involved, and depending on severity replacement may be the more practical path.
Can I store different brands together in the same humidor?
Yes, with one absolute exception. Traditional, non-flavoured cigars from different origins can coexist. Over months they will gradually marry, sharing trace aromatics, so use the cedar dividers that come with most quality humidors if you want to preserve distinct profiles — a full-bodied Nicaraguan ligero sitting beside a delicate Connecticut shade will eventually influence each other without separation.
The exception: never store flavoured or infused cigars alongside traditional ones. Artificial flavourings migrate aggressively into the cedar and cannot be removed. Once the wood is contaminated, every cigar you store in that box will carry the flavour. Keep them in a separate container — a small tupperdor works perfectly.
