Bolívar was launched in Havana, Cuba in 1901 and named after Simón Bolívar, a legendary South American leader. In the 1930s, the Cifuentes family moved production to Cuba, establishing Bolívar's reputation for full-bodied cigars made with excellent Cuban tobacco. Following the Cuban Revolution in 1960, the brand was nationalized, and the Cifuentes family finally licensed the rights to General Cigar for production outside of Cuba, starting in the 1970s. Bolívar cigars are renowned for their flavor and quality, earning them a strong reputation among cigar enthusiasts all over the world.
