The cigar, named after two individuals—one historical and the other contemporary—pays homage to the ancient Armenian general Vartan (or Vardan) Mamikonian. Known for his rebellion against the Sassanid Empire in the fifth century, he is venerated as a martyr and saint in the Armenian Church. The second namesake is Vartan Seferian, owner of Ambassador Boutique Cigars in Phoenix, Arizona, who partnered with El Septimo to create this blend. While the cigar features red packaging and dragon motifs unique to the Year of the Dragon edition, El Septimo's Chairman and CEO Zaya Younan clarified that the Vartan name is unrelated to the Lunar New Year or the Chinese Zodiac. Nonetheless, the allure of dragons persists in popular imagination. "Vartan The Dragon" is crafted in the "Presidente" size, measuring 6 3/4 inches with a 58 ring gauge. The blend combines tobaccos from five countries, showcasing a specially aged tobacco wrapper, Ecuadorian Havana as a binder, and filler from Costa Rica, Honduras, Nicaragua, and the Dominican Republic. Each tobacco is meticulously aged for 15 years, delivering a medium to solid flavor profile.
